It Started With One Paper Lamp
The first piece was a small paper 行灯 (andon) standing beside a doorway, the kind of lamp that once lit a Japanese entrance hall long before electricity reached it.
Switched on in a modern living room, it changed the whole space. The ceiling softened, the corners stopped shouting, and the room felt an hour later in the evening than it actually was. Nothing else in that house had done as much for as little.
That is the idea LIGHTSEKAI is built on. Rather than stocking every ceiling light on the market, we look for fixtures that treat light the way Japanese interiors always have: as something to be filtered and shaped, never simply switched to maximum. Our name says as much — 世界 (sekai) means world, and the world we are interested in is the one a good lamp builds around you after dark.
素材The Materials
Four Materials, Chosen for How They Hold Light
- 和紙Rice Paper
- Washi is fibrous rather than smooth, so it scatters light instead of blocking it. A paper shade turns a single bulb into a soft, even wash that never leaves a hard edge on a wall.
- 籐Rattan
- Woven cane is worked by hand around a frame, and no two weaves are identical. Lit from within, the gaps between the strands throw a pattern of fine shadows across a ceiling.
- 布Fabric
- Pleated and gathered cloth holds its shape while softening the beam, which is why our fabric pendants suit a dining table where you want warmth without glare.
- 木Timber
- Hand-finished wood grounds a fixture. The grain is left visible, so the piece keeps looking like something that was made rather than moulded.

Where Each Kind of Lamp Belongs
Most lighting mistakes are placement, not taste. Here is how we would use each style of fixture in a home, room by room.
玄関The Entrance
The first light anyone sees. A small paper lantern or a single wall lamp at shoulder height is enough — you want a welcome, not an inspection. Keep it warm and keep it low.

食卓The Dining Table
Hang the shade roughly 70–80cm above the tabletop so the light lands on the food and not in anyone’s eyes. A wide fabric or rattan shade spreads the glow across the whole table rather than spotlighting the centre.

Bedside light should be readable but never bright enough to wake the room. A diffused shade close to the wall gives you enough to read by while the rest of the room stays dim.

Four Rules Every Fixture Has to Pass
We are a small team, and a small team can afford to be fussy. These are the standards a lamp has to meet before it is offered to you.

Light Is Chosen Before Looks
Every fixture is judged switched on, in a dim room, at the hour you would actually use it. If the glow is harsh, patchy or cold, the piece does not make the store, however good it looks in a photograph.

A Small Lineup, Added To Slowly
We would rather offer one exceptional lantern than ten forgettable ones. New pieces join the range a few at a time, after we have lived with them, so the catalogue stays something you can read from top to bottom.

Honest About How It Is Made
These are hand-worked materials. Rattan weaves vary, paper carries its own grain, and timber differs from tree to tree. We treat those variations as the point of the piece rather than a fault to be hidden.

Priced for a Whole Room
Lighting is rarely a single purchase. Our volume tiers take 10% off two or three pieces, 15% off four or five, and 20% off six or more, applied in the bag automatically with no code to remember.
和の心The Japanese Spirit
Light, Not Brightness
和の心 (the Japanese spirit) finds beauty in the handmade and the imperfect: an uneven rattan weave, a soft edge of rice paper, the warm flicker of light through cloth. A shade that is slightly irregular is not a second-rate shade; it is the evidence of a hand at work.
Japanese interiors have never chased brightness. They shape it, filter it and let it settle. That is the idea behind everything we sell: shades that diffuse rather than glare, warm tones instead of cold ones, and pieces that look as considered switched off as they do switched on.
It is also why our fixtures suit western homes as easily as they do a tea room. A rattan pendant over a kitchen island, a paper lantern in a hallway, a resin leaf lamp beside a bed — none of it asks you to redecorate. It simply changes how the room feels once the sun has gone.

Made by Workshops, Shipped Direct to You
We are not a warehouse. Our fixtures are made to order by the specialist workshops that weave, fold and finish them, and they travel from the workshop to your door without sitting in a distribution centre in between. That is what lets a small store offer hand-worked lighting at a sane price.
The trade-off is time. Because each piece is made and dispatched individually, delivery usually takes two to four weeks rather than two to four days. We would rather tell you that plainly on this page than have it be a surprise after you have paid. If you need a fixture by a particular date, message us before you order and we will tell you honestly whether it will arrive.
Every piece is checked against photographs and specifications before it is listed, and anything that arrives not as described is our problem to fix, not yours.

How Your Order Travels
Paper and rattan are delicate, so every order is packed with the fragile parts supported and sent in recycled, recyclable materials. Shades ship braced inside the carton rather than loose, and fittings are boxed separately so nothing presses against a paper panel in transit.
If Something Is Not Right
Tell us and we will put it right. You have 30 days to return a fixture for any reason, and if a piece arrives damaged we would rather hear about it the same day than have you live with a lamp you are not happy with.
